TOUMEIBaku Takahashi/Tomoko Wada
Glass Artist

Desire to create something no one has ever seen
Glass artworks out of endless curiosity toward the material

We visited Mr Baku Takahashi and Mrs Tomoko Wada whose studio is located in Munakata city, Fukuoka. They launched a glassware brand “TOUMEI” in 2016 and have created various glass products with their unique view, such as interior objects or tableware for everyday use. What is fascinating about those products must be the simple yet unique shape and the color with distinctive transparency, making the most of their sense as glass artists. We drove a car to feel the wild and free sensitivity of the creators, which is conveyed through each piece of their work. After 40 minutes' drive from Hakata, we got to their studio in the countryside and were welcomed with friendly smiles.

Gracefully leaping over the border between art and craft

With a clear blue sky above, the heartwarming scenery, with little to disturb my sight, tells me that this place is near the sea. From the tranquil silence and cozy breeze, I feel that their calm presence is meant to be.
“After graduation from university, I worked for a glass studio in Nagano for about 5 years. Then, we got married and decided to go back to Fukuoka, my hometown. This studio, next to my parents’ house, used to be a stockroom for a tractor or machines and tools for farming. We renovated it by ourselves. (Baku).”
“I was groping for my style after I moved to Fukuoka. Then, a friend of mine advised me that it would be important for me to do what I should do first to continue doing what I wanted to do. It is rather costly to maintain a glass studio, for gas, electricity, and so forth. As a result of serious consideration of our financial situation and future prospects, we made up our mind to launch our brand (Tomoko).”

A high ceiling, a various shade of glass artworks at the window, and pieces of glass embedded in the mud wall; when I was feeling excited by the creative atmosphere of the studio, the melting furnace was lit. As the temperature rose, a tense atmosphere gradually filled the space.
“Blow!” With a cue from Baku, Tomoko blows into an iron blowpipe. When Baku spins the pipe, the bright red melting glass magically expands to be formed. In an instance, the plump and lovely shape is formed. The movement is nothing but efficient, graceful, and beautiful. While I was fascinated, one beautiful vase was completed.
Most of the products by TOUMEI are made with a technique called "free blowing", which forms a molten portion of glass by blowing air into it. Since glass is extremely sensitive to the temperature change, it is essential to judge the right timing and work swiftly. If the timing is wrong, it'll get broken or lose shape. During the forming process, therefore, the studio is covered with a tense atmosphere. If you actually see the production site, you will find the subtle differences between each one-and-only-handmade product even more adorable.

The characteristics of TOUMEI products must be the cheerful vividness of the colored glass and the simple yet unique design. Though they have the unique shape that you may have never seen, the appearance can smoothly slip into your daily lives. What lies under their craftsmanship, which is not only basic but humorous?
“What is important for our design is to be exciting for us to make and to be something we have never seen. We are also trying to design to bring out the internet, charm, and beauty of glass as a material. As you know, glass melts if heated and is transparent. By respecting those features of glass as a material, I think we can express our originality in our works (Baku).”
“Fortunately, we had a chance to inherit the century-old color developing method and knowledge from someone we had met here in Munakata, who had kept a traditional studio. We develop the color of glass with our original blending based on those documents we received. It takes time, indeed, but I think the process makes our original color and expression of TOUMEI (Tomoko).”
Working on product creation as TOUMEI, each of them is active as an artist. Baku creates artworks with rich humanity in its vivid usage of color and minimal design, and Tomoko creates 3-dimensional artworks that describe the depth of mind inside of transparent space. Though their ways of expression are different, they have sought their creativity, being charmed by the material, glass.

Floating beauty in a closed glass space

Since her childhood, Tomoko has liked to find small glass artworks while traveling and collected them. Aiming to be a glass artist, she entered Tama Art University and studied glass at the department of crafts.
“When I was in high school, I was in the department of Interior doing woodwork. To make furniture, even a one-millimeter gap can be fatal. And I realized that such strict craftsmanship was not for me. Rather than that, I wanted to create more freely with my hands. That was how I made up my mind to do glass, which I have always liked since my childhood.”
One of the artworks Tomoko has been consistently creating since sophomore is box-shaped glasswork. You'll feel "space" and "room", which she has been interested in, from those transparent boxes. For the interior and the exterior wall, various materials she has picked up near the studio are used. Twigs, stones, wire gauzes, and things that look like trash, which resonated with her sense of beauty and interest, are combined with glass.
“I believe what is important for my artwork is things I found. I simply stretch the points which attracted me and interested me. Then, familiar material changes to something new that I have never seen. I have faced my creative activity expecting to see such a brand-new view (Tomoko).”

Beyond dialogue with glass
To create something no one has ever seen

If you take a look at the creative artworks Baku produces, your imagination will be stirred up. In my imagination, those pop, colorful, and round-shaped artworks stick together to make a lively and adorable outline, as if it were a living organism. How does he conceive those unique works?
“Actually, there was once a time when I lost the meaning of self-expression with glass. The trouble was that the expression I wanted to do didn't match well with the material. So, I decided to ignore what I wanted to do for the moment and face the material, glass. As a result, I found the answer in the material after all. To be transparent and to be melted if heated; by simply focusing on my interest and honest reaction toward those "mysterious" features glass has, I am trying to find my way of expression. So, there is no special motif. I think I am facing glass every day to create something I have never seen (Baku).”
Baku Takahashi and Tomoko Wada are working on glass, baring their curiosity as creators. Their endless spirit of inquiry to glass kindle the products that TOUMEI spreads. Gracefully crossing art and craft, their craftsmanship will never stop entertaining us.
